Is there lack of consistency in English law, although suicide is legal, anyone who tries it is deemed to be of?

I couldn't find the word 'suicide' in the article. If the father was intending to commit suicide, then it should have just involved him. Taking his two children and deliberately trying to kill them is murder. if it was preplanned and thus he must have been deemed to have been of sound mind when he made the decision.
